“TSN over 5G brings robust mobile communications to factories for increasing efficiency and safety,” according to José Costa-Requena, CEO of Cumucore, has stated during the demonstration of precise time synchronization over 5G on the Industrial 5G Day of 5G-ACIA held in Miraikan in Tokyo. “Mobile communications through TSN sets, according to the confirmed by José Costa-Requena, the baseline for reliable connectivity for new AI based processes is the first stepping stone for smart factories”.
The 5G Mobile Private Network system developed by Cumucore and presented at Miraikan (Tokyo) by Mitsubishi Electric and Qualcomm, together with NodeH, Askey, and ISL Networks, has achieved a timing accuracy of 10 ns using the 802.1AS protocol over 5G.

The demonstration shows that accurate reference time information from a grandmaster (GM) clock installed in a manufacturing plant can be transmitted to downstream CC-Link IE TSN devices using the 802.1 AS/gPTP protocol. The GM reference time is sent via the 5G TSN bridge to the Qualcomm Snapdragon SDX72 and then to a Mitsubishi Electric PLC (programmable logic controller). The PLC controls downstream IO devices that require time synchronization with the master clock.
For its part, Cumucore can deliver already TSN over 5G for factories, harbours, airports.
